We join our family every year in San Antonio for the Annual Buddy Walk in support of our little cousin Richie Hughes. The Buddy Walk was established by the National Down Syndrome Society to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. We realized that Corpus Christi, TX does not have many programs for people with Down syndrome and we want to change that.
We started a beach volleyball tournament callled Richie's Beach Ball Blast which encourages community members to get involved and donate money to support people with Down syndrome. The volleyball tournament is set up in a single bracket format and teams complete for a grand prize of gift cards donated by sponsors. They encourage people of all ages and abilities to join them at this family-friendly event.
Funds are raised from team registrations, food sales and donations. In addition to fundraising, their goal is to get people talking about Down syndrome and to encourage more people in the community to value, accept and include people with Down syndrome in day-to-day life.
Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for the National Down Syndrome Society.
We invite everyone to help out in some way and have fun in the process! Please contact us if you’d like to get involved.
